June 4, 2020: News Update

Dear Neighbors,

This morning, my Council Office received the announcement below for a Black Lives Matters Flower March in La Jolla, June 12 from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.

Over the course of the day, my Council office has been in contact with Danika Zikas, the organizer named on the flyer.  Danika graduated today from Helix High School.  My office has also been in contact with the San Diego Police Department; and the presidents of the La Jolla Village Merchants Association, Town Council, Community Planning Association, Traffic & Transportation Board, Parks & Beaches, Inc., Shores Association and Bird Rock Community Council. As your representative, it is my duty and honor to provide a safe space for all San Diegans.

La Jolla community leaders and I intend to be present at the gathering on June 12.  I am very proud of the way the leaders, especially the Village Merchants Association, are welcoming the students and their peaceful march to La Jolla.  We are truly a community that cares about our City and all San Diegans.

What we know so far is that the student organizers are working with the Police to get the necessary permits to meet at or near the Cove.  They intend to hand out flowers, water, etc. starting about noon, listen to a few speakers and then walk toward Windansea.  The event will end at about 3:00 p.m. This is the first and only verifiable information of such an event planned for La Jolla that I have received.

Again, my staff continues to trace back all rumors and information we hear about.  If I receive more information about this march or any other actual event planned for La Jolla, I will communicate it with you.

Sincerely,
